Remake Seattle Community

We’re back, bringing together some of the most valuable contributors in the local fashion industry to discuss the importance of policy and sustainability in creating systemic change. The goal is to raise awareness about the biggest issues to date (ex: fast fashion), what we each are doing to address them here in Washington, and empower our community to get involved. There will be time to network and build relationships, especially with current and recently graduate fashion students. The event will be hosted in collaboration with Prairie Underground and the Remake Seattle Community.

Speakers: Sydney Porter at Seattle Sewn, Tanya Knannlein at Seattle Central College, Megan Davis at Department of Ecology

Side Panel: Laura Cassidy at Recompose

About the speakers

Lisa Graham is a co-founder of RAVEL, a startup based in Seattle with an experienced technical team building a circular economy solution for textile waste. The Ravel solution takes dirty blended mixed materials, mainly polyester, and transforms them back into mono-material like new fiber. Additionally, Lisa’s background as an Investor and Private Company Board Member with a focus on clean-tech, manufacturing, and manufacturing related services fits nicely with the goals of Ravel. She sits on the board of LaFarge and Egge, and Herzog Glass, and is an investor in other emerging sustainability companies, such as Tidal Vision and Aquagga, two companies pursuing organic solutions to water filtration and PFAS elimination.

Megan Davis has over a decade of experience in sustainable materials management. In her role with the Department of Ecology, she works within the Recycling Market Development Center (RMDC) to curate strategic partnerships, develop circular supply chain logistics, and implement environmentally preferable purchasing practices. Textiles is her current focus and plans to discuss bridging solid waste data to actionable solutions through the work done at the RMDC and Ecology.

Sydney Porter began her work in sustainability during her time as an Environmental Studies student at the University of Washington. In her time as a student, Sydney led grassroots campaigns to pass legislation in Washington to promote sustainable, thriving communities. Bringing in a background of broad-systems sustainability thinking, Sydney joined the Seattle Good Business Network in 2022 eager to expand the benefits of a circular economy in her own community. Since then, she has supported businesses across the state in accessing the tools and communities to reach their sustainability goals.

Tanya Knnanlein has been teaching in the School of Apparel Design & Development at Seattle Central College for over 10 years and has a background as a clothing and textile designer. Her areas of teaching specialty are design, textiles, and technology. In 2023, she earned a Master’s degree focusing on sustainable fashion at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin. For her thesis, she researched sustainable practices in apparel with the aim of educating students on these topics. She created a collection as proof of concept, which explores circular design principles, upcycling, and machine knitting.

STYLE COMMUNITY TOUR AT RECOMPOSE

Wednesday June 26 from 6:15pm to 7:30pm in Georgetown/Sodo

At the Remake event, we talked a lot about the life cycle of a garment and end of life plans from a brand or design perspective—but here’s an opportunity to think about end of life in another way.

The sustainable fashion and style community is invited to a special event at Recompose, the Olson Kundig-designed ecological funeral home leading the world in a revolutionary new death care alternative: human composting. Come see why founder Katrina Spade says every decision is a design decision. Space is limited to 35 people; sign up here
