On view through October

Tiffany Ju will be Prairie Underground’s Artist in Residence from September through October.  Her residency will explore the use of recycled garments, fabric scraps, and other collected objects within our warehouse to produce new work.  Her process may be observed during our boutique hours Thursday through Saturday 10am-5pm.
A reception is planned for Saturday, October 12th from 6-9pm.

From the Artist:
Weaving has been a main methodology in my work.  Craft, with its implications of trade, functionality and femininity has had an uneasy relationship with art. I use the most basic weaving methodologies to explore ideas and create forms that break away from the familiar.  I weave to create personally stimulating forms that connect color, texture and dimensionality.  Throughout this process, I am confronted with my psychological ability to live with conflicting values and actions.  My use of waste material is an attempt to ameliorate shame and anxiety about the conflicting choices that I make every day.  I believe this conflict looms large in our cultural subconscious and by making, it can be sublimated into sensations of joy and curiosity.

About the Artist Series:
Our Artist Series launched in 2015 as a non-commercial gallery and social practice focused on emerging artists, mostly in our region, to create space for art and dialogue in Georgetown. At times we’ve endeavored to display the purpose of our gallery as much as the work itself. It’s a manner of working that is also evident in our design practice and proposals.

The program has provided funding, space and use of materials for artists to create work in their chosen medium to be exhibited in our gallery. By investing in the production of new art and inviting artists into our design process we hope to create more precious clothing and ultimately a better world.
