life + style to you:
every Friday

June 13th, 2008
When
one of our best girlfriends had surgery last week, we kept her company
on the couch, watching old movies and eating nothing but smoothies and
pudding. One of the movies on the bill was the The Sound of Music,
and now we have had that song about “a few of our favorite things”
stuck in our heads. But it got us thinking about what we would include
in a list of our favorite things. So here are a few of them …
Raindrops
on roses, whiskers on kittens… oops, wrong list! Hudson dark wash
skinny jeans—seriously, even if you think you can’t wear this style,
these pants will prove you wrong. Fresh bouquets of flowers in the
house. Anything pink. Anything sparkly. Anything pink and sparkly.
Gossip blogs (we love that cheeky Perez Hilton), fashion magazines,
fruity cocktails, four-inch stilettos, bubble baths, quarterbacks (can
you say Tom Brady?), Breakfast at Tiffany’s—and Tiffany
itself, anything vanilla-scented, all things Italian, Seattle Picks and
all the other Picks—and of course, our fab local readers.
Another favorite? Pampering y-o-u! Forward this issue of Seattle Picks to 5 friends and CC picks@seattlepicks.com. You could win a $25 gift certificate to The Bathery Electrolysis and Skincare! |

A Stylish Send Off
It’s
4:49 pm and we are stuck in traffic, we got yelled at by our boss, lost
our favorite lip gloss, and to top it off, we just realized that we
forgot to mail Dad’s Father’s Day gift. If we rush, we could make it
just before the post office closes, but standing in line with screaming
children, listening to each clerk describe why the stamp has increased
yet another penny is the last thing we need right now.
Then
we remember Sip & Ship, Greenwood’s newest caffeine-inspired
watering hole. At least this way if we have to wait in line, there’s
the promise of a foamy cappuccino at the end of it. They have all the
post office essentials like private mailboxes, packing materials and
access to major carriers like UPS, but in addition to the basics, they
also offer goodies for adding a stylish finishing touch to a package,
ranging from letterpress cards to lotions by Lollia.
As
we relax with a yummy cappuccino and savory dill biscuit, we can feel
the whole awful day melting away… and we may never go back to the post
office again.

Urban Chic Chick
For
the most part, we’ve got the urban-chic thing down. Great shoes? Done
and done. Great clothes? Of course. Great apartment? Check. Great
furnishings in our apartment? We’ve got… hmmm…
Yep, that
last one had us stumped until we found Retrofit Home. But in this
delightfully hip shop, we found unique furniture that fits our home and
our style. Everything seems to be stocked with an eye toward smaller,
city condos rather than larger, suburban homes. Yet nothing is so
minimalist that it sacrifices comfort or fails to make an impact. From
the rugs on the floors to the lights on the ceilings and everything in
between, we found what we needed for eating, sleeping and just living.
Not
to mention, when we needed a little help with colors for a corner and
an idea for an alcove, they were all over it. They offer design
services that range from a single suggestion to whole rooms, without
the pretension or stuffiness that can make interior design so
intimidating. And last, we can say great furnishings? Oh yeah, we got that.

Spahhhhhhh
We
got into our first fender bender this past weekend. Don’t worry—no one
was hurt and the damage was minor. In fact, our biggest concern was
whether we were going to miss our massage appointment. Seriously, if
anything, we were going to need it more than ever, right?
Thank
goodness we didn’t let a little old car accident get in the way of our
day of relaxation. We made it to Penterra Spa just in the nick of time.
Penterra is the perfect place for escapism—in the best sense of the
word. We spent the afternoon getting foot soaks in the sanctuary,
relaxing with a LaStone massage and dawdling in the sauna. Part of the
new Heathman Hotel in Kirkland, Penterra Spa provides luxurious
services: from manis and pedis to waxing and massage that soothes even
the most frazzled of guests.
We left feeling refreshed
and relaxed. We felt so good in fact, we didn’t even mind calling the
dreaded insurance company to make our claim. Thanks, Penterra!

It’s in the Bag, Baby!
We
can’t leave the house without an entire barrage of supplies for our
day—water, umbrella, snacks, sunglasses—the list goes on. So when we
find a bag that is spacious enough to carry around our lives, we are sold. Especially when it’s as distinctive as the Soiree bag by Crystalyn Kae.
We
love the kick pleats of rare textiles—plus, there are only a few made
in each fabric, so we know we are getting something unique. It’s
perfection.

You Light Up My Life
Last
week, we got up for a drink of water in the middle of the night and
tripped over the cat on our way down the hall. It was the third time
that week. Solution? A unique night light from Atlantis Fused Glass.
They
fuse any of your photographs into glass, and then shape it into a
pendant, ornament, coaster or night light. It’s the most original way
to showcase your pictures that we have ever seen. Naturally, we chose
our cat.

Summer Style for Seattle
June
in Seattle is not quite summer—it’s somewhere between cool drizzles and
partial sun. It was getting us all worked up until we found the perfect
outfit for chilly June weather from the eco-friendly line Prairie
Underground.
It has a cozy hood for the sprinkles, and
modern funkiness with the big side zipper and flirty skirt. And should
the sun decide to appear, it’s sleeveless. This casually hip item is
available at the end of June at www.nbptstudio.com; click below to shop
the full summer line.
